Status Quo and major challenges of digitalization for SMEs – and the solutions!

Digital transformation is only for the big players? What a persistent myth. In fact, digitalization holds great opportunities for SMEs and can even level out inequalities between small and big companies. Yet, not all small- and medium-sized enterprises embrace digitalization: A study by IDC from 2016 revealed that only 42% of small businesses worldwide are actively engaged with digital transformation to automate functions, derive real-time insights, and optimize processes for performance gains.

But there is so much to gain! The mentioned study also showed that there is a connection between the state of digital transformation and revenue growth: Whereas 52% of the most fast-growing SMEs stated a rather high progress in digital transformation, only 28% of companies with flat or declining growth declared the same. Still, it is understandable that smaller firms dread bigger investments and the risks that come with it. But standing still is also not an option. Instead, let us look at the major challenges of digitalization for small and medium-sized companies and how they can tackle it!

We recently highlighted the increased efficiency that remote working has on a business in our article the future trends of work for companies. The ability to work from anywhere is now commonplace and widely accepted thanks to new innovations, technologies and a change of working culture, which strives for efficiency. Consider for a moment how much time we waste on travelling to work, meetings, people not turning up on time etc. As we try to squeeze more and more into our day, time is arguably at its highest premium.

So the question is; how can we work more effectively with clients, suppliers and colleagues with the use of new technology?

Our next community member is ready to be announced! We are delighted to spread more fantastic news about the CODE_n SPACES – there has been another exciting addition to the Innovation Campus: A team from the smart data company AXON INSIGHT moved into CODE_n SPACES in June 2017. AXON INSIGHT is part of the Axon Active Group, which developed the map technology for Google Maps among other things. The company offers insights into real-time network relationships – which can be extremely valuable in case of customer acquisition and risk management! One of the company’s plans is to establish a new generation of digital marketing in the financial industry in collaboration with GFT Technologies SE. Their focus here is on digital assistance systems for consultants in the financial industry, in the distribution, risk management and fraud prevention sectors. We spoke with Almir Adrovic (head of business development and member of the Executive Board) about the business concept and asked how they became the latest resident of CODE_n SPACES.
