Guest feature Bitkom | Quick look back: Get Started Founders’ Breakfast with Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann

Baden-Wuerttemberg – and the metropolitan region in and around Stuttgart in particular – is well known for the abundance of manufacturing enterprises based in the area, from IT giants like HP and SAP to production conglomerates like Daimler, Bosch, and Trumpf. It’s hardly surprising that the state is also seeing more and more startups in the area, also thanks to valuable support provided to business founders by initiatives like CODE_n and STARTUP AUTOBAHN. The CODE_n SPACES offices in Stuttgart were full to bursting today as we enjoyed a discussion with the state Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann and talked about needs and ideas for the area from the perspective of business founders.

“I feel that in 2018 many doors will open to us in step with increasing industry adaptation” Dr. Christoph Amma, Kinemic

We love spontaneous alumni catch ups! We recently ran into a familiar face in the halls of CODE_n SPACES: Dr. Christoph Amma, co-founder of Kinemic, honored us with his visit to the innovation campus during an event. Already as a finalist of the CODE_n CONTEST 2016, Kinemic enthralled us and the jury with the technology it has developed for gesture recognition and its diverse use cases in industry. Of course, we took advantage of this spontaneous encounter to get an update and spoke with Christoph about the development activities of his startup. Christoph, who personally invented the concept of air writing – the basis for the innovative gesture recognition software – talks to us about a range of topics, including how augmented reality is now gradually gaining acceptance in small and medium-sized companies and about what all exciting things have been happening at Kinemic in the past year.

“We also read a lot of clever startup books – and yet we had to gain the experience ourselves.” Co-founders of aucobo

They knew for a long time that they both wanted to found a company. After many ideas, Michael Reutter and Benjamin Schaich discovered their shared vision to improve industrial processes by means of smart networking of production facilities – and aucobo was born! The founders are deeply rooted in the Baden-Württemberg region. With their background in mechanical engineering and commercial information technology as well as their fascination for the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0, they use their skills and passion to improve industrial processes. The company was founded in 2016. At almost the same time the team moved into the CODE_n SPACES innovation hub – since then we have been able to witness the development of the startup up close! The business idea has since developed rapidly and with it the founders.

Celebrating two years of CODE_n SPACES – opening of third floor planned for February 2018

What an amazing year it’s been for CODE_n SPACES! In February the offices at Schelmenwasenstr. 34 were getting a bit too cramped, so we expanded into the building next door and set up SPACES #2 to provide extra space for enterprising digital pioneers. In the meantime, there are more than half a dozen or so startups driving innovation on the innovation campus, in sectors like health tech, AI and robotics, big data, and Industry 4.0. There are also some corporate innovation teams such as the Daimler Incubator Lab1886. We’re currently expanding again by another 500 square meters, so by early 2018 even more promising teams will call CODE_n SPACES home. The second anniversary of SPACES on Dec. 7, 2017 was a good chance for a get-together to celebrate with residents, friends, and business partners! At the event, there was also a teaser session on “The Human Factor in Digitalization”. Here’s a summary of the events at the celebration.

2 years of CODE_n SPACES: CODE2ORDER takes a look back with us

2015 marks a key milestone for CODE_n: In December, the Innovation Campus CODE_n SPACES opened its doors with the vision of establishing a meeting place for people who want to change the status quo and create new things. Now it brings together more than half a dozen startups driving innovations in sectors like health tech, AI and robotics, big data or Industry 4.0, as well as corporate innovation teams such as the Daimler Incubator Lab1886. The residents are the heart of SPACES and make the Stuttgart location what it is today. We spoke with a team that was one of the first residents to move in with us. Patrick Luik, co-founder and CEO of the CODE2ORDER software startup takes a look back with us at our time together.

“More than 43% of trucks on the streets are empty. We want to change that.” Interview with logistics startup Transmetrics

An industry once criticized for being slow to embrace new ideas is gaining momentum: Logistics is transforming from a traditional sector into a flagship, showing how technology can solve real-world problems. One example of this is CODE_n Alumnus Transmetrics – an ambitious team working with co-founders Anna Shaposhnikova and Asparuh Koev, who together developed a SaaS tool for predictive analytics. How is this revolutionizing the sector, you may think? With 43% of trucks on the road basically traveling empty, you might get a sense of how unbelievably inefficient modern cargo transport can be. Transmetrics is ushering in a new era of intelligent, anticipatory logistics! The core team talked to us about the developments they are sure are about to hit the sector, and the role Transmetrics is planning to play in this.

“The automotive industry is about to undergo the biggest change in its history.” Matin Ebrahimchel of Lab1886, the Daimler incubator

Something big is a-happenin’ in CODE_n SPACES. For a number of months now, there’s been an “innovation team with a difference” pacing the corridors of the campus in Stuttgart. This year marked the launch of the new Daimler incubator Lab1886, which chose CODE_n SPACES as the premises for its fourth site, aside from Berlin, China, and the United States. The “global innovation machinery” – as it likes to call itself – was already announced at the GFT Inspiration Day (see here for our write-up). Matin Ebrahimchel, CEO of LAB1886 GmbH, joined us for an interview on the new incubator and the underlying initiative.
