AmbiGate, a spin-off of the university of Tubingen, is specialized in 3D sensor solutions. The team, compromising 3 founders and 6 professors, wants to disrupt the physical therapy market through a combination of innovative AI and sensor-motoric algorithms, 3D sensors, and a highly motivating treatment approach called ExerGame. The startup is also a CODE_n CONTEST finalist in the HealthTech cluster. We talked to Caroline Dabels, founder and CMO of AmbiGate, to find out more.

What is AmbiGate all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Caroline: AmbiGate develops innovative motion sensing solutions. Awarded by the federal ministry of economics was our product eReha – a video game-based exercise therapy for domestic and business environment, developed by AmbiGate. It can be used preventively, parallel to physiotherapy and for corporate healthcare programs. As an ExerGame, the system provides medical exercises in a virtual environment. A 3D sensor analyses the patient’s executions and locates false movements in real time. During the workout, innovative disease-specific parameters are measured and sent to the physiotherapist for a dynamic therapy adaptation and progress.

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Roboception from Germany

Roboception, one of our CODE_n CONTEST finalists in the Photonics 4.0 cluster, offers innovative navigation, real-time perception, and manipulation solutions for robotic systems. The startups’s innovative sensor solutions enable customers across all robotic fields to generate real-time 3D data products that also revolve around timing and location. It aims for highly intuitive, user-friendly interfaces, parametrization, and programming. As a result – and this is really good news – no detailed knowledge of robotics is required to set up or operate our solutions. Roboception CEO Michael Suppa tells us just how this is done!

What is Roboception all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Michael: Roboception offers innovative real-time perception, navigation and manipulation solutions for robotic systems.

Vision in robotics is a very challenging problem. Today’s vision solutions are nowhere near being as efficient and intuitive as they need to be in order to comply with the rapid advances in the robotics industry. What’s more, a very strong expertise is still required to operate them, hence only real experts can set up these solutions. Last but not least, the robot’s environment must be engineered and adapted in order to achieve robust and reliable operation of a vision system. All of this requires individual engineering, resulting in high cost and limited versatility. Add to that the fact that camera solutions and lasers usually come at a high price (for just the sensor!) so that in combination with the engineering cost, an automation of processes becomes economically unviable, especially for small batches.

We founded Roboception to overcome these drawbacks and make robot vision available to a wide range of both existing and novel applications. It is our mission to enable our customers to equip each of their current or future robots with our solution and to hence allow them to perceive their environment.

Our low-cost innovative sensor solution is combined with an intuitive user interface enabling even non-experts to work with robot vision. From the very first line of code we’ve written, we have been working closely with interaction designers in order to achieve this challenging goal.

Finally, our robotic applications are ready-to-use so that our customers can directly generate value in automating previously manual processes in their production.

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Ginmon from Germany

gm_logoCODE_n CONTEST Finalist Ginmon allows customers to invest money in a globally diversified portfolio based on proven scientific methods. Customers gain access to high returns while enjoying the low risk associated with broad investments in over 10,000 companies in 47 countries. The FinTech startup provides a transparent, all-inclusive solution that enables customers to understand their investments and give them the feeling their finances are in safe hands. How? That’s what CEO and founder Lars Reiner, told us in this interview.

What is Ginmon all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Lars: Ginmon is all about providing a modern and efficient personal wealth management. While working for one of biggest commercial banks in Germany I realized that proven scientific concepts were often not offered to customers. Those concepts are taught around the globe and proven many times. Banks do not offer products based on those concepts because they are very low margin and not as profitable as traditional products. Therefore to really profit from professional wealth management one has to study investment theory and do it himself or pay horrendous sums to personal wealth managers. Additionally it seemed to me that large companies could not or did not want to react and adapt to the possibilities digitalization provided. As a technology and innovation loving person I had a concrete idea about how customers could benefit from digitalization, but the established financial industry did not provide me with the right setting to implement those ideas. Finally the request of many friends and family members who were looking for a solution to build wealth efficiently triggered my decision to start Ginmon. To put it in a nutshell: I wanted to implement the ideas I had for digital wealth management, provide an investment concept which was up date only restricted to professionals and last but not least enable my friends and family members to build up wealth efficiently.

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: SpinDiag from Germany

SpinDiag enables fully automated, PCR-based screening for drug-resistant pathogens in less than 30 minutes. The system consists of a disposable lab-on-a-disk and a portable device. Hospitals can screen quickly and reliably during patient admission and isolate and treat risk patients. This significantly reduces the risk of infection to other patients and cuts hospital costs. In this interview, Mark Keller, Co-Founder of SpinDiag, tells us more about the vision for his startup and the challenges their facing in this very specific sector:

What is SpinDiag all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Mark: Hospitals have a big and increasing problem with antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are brought in by patients and that can infect other patients. Our SpinDiag one system enables the detection of these antibiotic-resistant bacteria directly from common swab samples. Therefore, when patients are admitted to a hospital they can be tested quickly and non-invasively. This allows doctors to decide right away if a patient needs to be treated in isolation to protect others from getting infected. This idea actually came to us when we were talking to clinicians and became aware that the best way to prevent an infection is to know about it directly at the hospital gate.

Mark: Our SpinDiag one system will be the first to cover all relevant antibiotic resistances while providing this diagnostic result in a fast and affordable manner. For the first time, this will allow hospitals to consistently screen any risk patient (or even every patient) at his or her admission. Because all in all, our system will save money both for hospitals and the health care system in general, will protect staff and patients and will allow targeted treatment of infected patients, we believe that it will disruptively change our way how we fight antibiotic resistances in the near future. Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: otego from Germany

otego_logoCODE_n CONTEST finalist otego is poised to be the first manufacturer of low-cost thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that are suitable for mass use. By avoiding batteries in IoT devices, otego TEGs are a sustainable solution for harvesting energy using wireless sensors and actuators. Frederick Lessmann (Business Development), has answered all our questions about his startup that was selected for the photonics cluster:

What is otego all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Frederick: otego develops innovative thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that transform heat sources into sources of electricity – maintenance-free and by utilizing even small differences in temperature. With otego-TEGs many Internet of Things devices will gain a new power source that makes them independent from batteries.

“Digital Disruption“ – that’s the motto of this year’s CODE_n CONTEST. What makes your solution innovative, what makes it disruptive?

Frederick: Ambient heat is almost everywhere. But so far we don’t really know how to utilize these small differences in temperature. What solar cells are for transforming light into electrical power our generators will be the equivalent for the transformation of heat. In other words, thanks to our generators heat sources will turn into power sources all of the sudden. I think this is pretty disruptive. And most importantly our generators will cost less than alternatives like cables or batteries which hopefully will make them a true innovation in the market. More…

Wearable devices will soon generate large volumes of medical grade data, but without analysis and insight from health experts, they won’t reach their full potential. That is why our CODE_n CONTEST finalist WearHealth is on a mission to enable personalized mobile preventive health care by bringing together medical wearable technology, artificial intelligence, and health experts. Co-founder and CEO Esteban Bayro Kaiser tells us how this can be achieved:

What is WearHealth all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Esteban: WearHealth is the AI-driven platform that learns from health experts and data from wearables to empower Personal Health Assistance.

We are a research spin-off from the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the University Bremen and have years of experience in dealing with data from wearables and machine learning. Due to the increasing shortage in global health workforce and avoidable healthcare costs that are attributed to non-adherence, there is a high demand for new solutions in the area of mobile health. At WearHealth we are building a context-aware personal health assistant (PHA) that is able to learn from health experts and data from wearables.

The first version of the PHA is able to recognize gestures such as pill-intake, eating and smoking with the help of commercially available wearables to support patients with medication adherence. We are working together with our customers the re- and health insurances and pharmaceutical industry to bring this solution to the market. More…

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Toposens from Germany

toposens_logoToposens, one of our CODE_n CONTEST finalists of the Connected Mobility cluser, builds innovative 3D sensor technology and is developing a completely new method of localizing 3D positions through ultrasound and radar for the precise 3D detection of objects in real time. The Toposens sensor system generates new ways of providing non-optical vision for technical objects, such as robots, autonomous vehicles, or IoT systems. The founding team consists of the two engineers Alexander Rudoy and Rinaldo Persichini and Tobias Bahnemann, who we’ve talked to in this interview.

What is Toposens all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Toposens builds innovative 3D sensors, which can perceive their surroundings via ultrasound in real time. Basically, we transfer the ability of a bat to see in the dark to technical devices. It is small, low power, robust and precise, available for a competitive price and protects privacy. The sensor can be used for gesture control, collision avoidance and to track people.

During his mechatronics studies, Alexander Rudoy wanted to build a toy robot fish that swims around in an aquarium, powered by electromagnetic fields. For this purpose, he needed a 3D sensor to locate the fish underwater. There was no suitable sensor available on the market due to technological issues or because they were too expensive. Therefore, Alex started developing the algorithm for the 3D ultrasound sensor over the course of the following three years by himself. In 2014, he got together with Rinaldo Persichini and Tobias Bahnemann and they started Toposens.

Toposens did not improve existing technology – we developed a novel technology from scratch that is superior to the existing ones in many important aspects. Even though ultrasound has been used for a long time, our algorithm allows us to be the first one to receive 3D “images” from a single ultrasound sensor system.

The specifications of ultrasound technology make it possible for the first time to build a 3D sensor system which is mobile, low power, robust and reasonably priced. More…

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Netbeast from Germany

netbeast_logoNetbeast – one of our Connected Mobility Mobility finalists of our CODE_n CONTEST – developed an open source platform that connects devices of any brand or technology and can add support for new devices through community collaboration. The startup, based in Munich, allows developers to create IoT apps for smart devices without having to worry about compatibility issues. Jon Senra Dearle, CEO and Co-Founder told us more about his company:

What is Netbeast all about? How did you come up with the idea?

Jon: Netbeast is a software platform that allows smart home devices to communicate with each other regardless of their brand or technology. Netbeast makes homes help people to focus what really matters.

The Co-founders know each other from University. In the last year of their career they thought about creating a smart hub which allows any device to connect to it and then all devices could communicate with each other. We started our research in the smart home field and realized that there were a lot of smart home solutions – yet none of them was smart enough. Smart devices can not communicate to each other at all, which makes them island solutions. So we decided to create a software solution that could be installed anywhere and allows devices to be smarter than they naturally are.

“Digital Disruption“ – that’s the motto of this year’s CODE_n CONTEST. What makes your solution innovative, what makes it disruptive?

Jon: Currently, there are a lot of smart home products, but they can not communicate with each other, even they are smart as well. This is due to the fact that the devices are from different brands or they use different protocols to communicate like wifi or Bluetooth.

There are some solutions on the market at the moment however they are closed environments. Devices can only communicate with each other if they belong to certain brands. So let’s say I want to include another smart device to that environment: I can never be sure if that is going to work, because I wouldn’t know exactly which device I had to buy. Customers can only buy certain brands, if they wanted to make it work and not any brand, meaning you couldn’t always get what you wanted. We’re changing that: from now on, customers can turn their homes into a smart one with any device. You don’t have to think about this anymore.
