Trends and new applications of photonics: changing the game in mobility and manufacturing

Photonics smarten up our whole environment: cities become smart cities, mobility becomes smart mobility and factories become smart factories. This is all happening because photons, that are optics and lasers, joined forces with electronics and evolved to photonics. Today the technological use of light is a key driver of digital transformation. Especially applications of photonics in telecommunication and sensor technology lay the ground for innovations in mobility and manufacturing. Let’s dive into the trends and new applications of photonics!

Everything will soon be connected, which means that the demand for network bandwidth is exploding. At the same time we want to hold energy consumption at low cost. The solution: photonics! In our increasingly digitalized world, photonics offer highly effective solutions for sensors and data transport. This makes it a key enabling technology for the digital transformation, including the internet of things, big data transfer or computation. Dr. Ing. e.h. Peter Leibinger, Vice-Chairman of the Managing Board at our valued partner TRUMPF gave a comprising and very inspiring keynote about new possibilities of photonics at the new.New Festival. More…

The Network of Success – 7 Tips to forge a strong business network for your startup

shutterstock_351655727

A strong and dynamic network is the secret of many successful companies. Whether it is an enterprise, a mid-sized company or a startup, an extensive network assists with recruiting, client acquisition and – in the best case – funding.

One is not born as a networker; instead it is more some sort of an inner attitude, which enables a person to forge numerous new contacts. If you lack the attitude, you don’t have to be worried, like most other business-skills, you just need the right strategy and insides. Take the following tips by heart and harvest the advantages of an efficient business network:

1. Don’t let extraverts intimidate you
Extraverts go to an event and comeback with a stack of business cards and 3 coffee chats scheduled for next week. Don’t let them intimidate you. It is okay you only made one contact.

2. Showing your face matters
When you go to events and could not speak with anyone, you may feel like going to events are time consuming, torturous, and useless. But remember, showing your face matters. Just give yourself these simple goals and feel good about it.

3. Choose your game
There are gazillions of startup related events happening everyday all over Europe. You can’t attend them all – impossible. Only choose the ones you are really interested in. If you are a business person, don’t auto-mute technical events. For example, if you are interested in the Analytics space, you might want to attend Data Science meetup. Yes, the majority of attendees will be developers. Yes, you will be likely to see a slide with lines of code that you can’t understand; but there is much more you can gain. Even simply knowing those technology exist gives you a better understanding of the market. If someone asks you “why are you here?” just tell them “I am interested in this subject and simply want to educate myself”. As easy as pie! More…

Guest feature – EnBW | EVs and customer experience: a great combination!

At the moment the discussion around electric vehicles is all around the society and has also been picked up by the whole industry.

However, most of the discussion spans around the challenges of charging infrastructure as well as the challenges around battery capacity, charging times for long distance coverage. Therefore I think it is about time to change perspective and think about the customer experience and how EVs will make our life easier.

To start with I believe it is important to agree on what really matters to customers and human beings. As a concept I strongly believe that the single most valuable thing to human beings is time as it is the only thing which is limited and cannot “yet” be extended. Almost all highly successful products launched these days relate to this thesis (think about smartphones, or digital services like Airbnb or Uber).

So let’s look at EVs from that perspective:

The next generation of EVs will come with battery capacities of 150-200 kW/h which is good for more than 500 km.At the same time when we look at statistics we realize that average distance covered per person/day is 46 km and even less so only 12.3 km consecutively per day. The next thing to consider is that next generation of EVs is also preparing for induction based charging.

Facing up to the Energiewende 2.0 with partners from Baden-Württemberg

As a result of the phasing out of nuclear energy and the associated expansion of renewable energies, German energy supply companies are faced with a multitude of challenges particularly in their core areas of generation/trading, sales and the grids business.

This development has been accompanied by the complex fragmentation of the market and an increased demand from customers for individual solutions and above all for technical developments such as highly scalable, intelligent IT platforms. However, this has now all resulted in a further transformation of the energy world – an “Energiewende 2.0” which is being ushered in on a new digital level. This has caused the energy world to become blurred with other sectors. New competitors, especially those with a high level of IT expertise, are forcing their way onto the existing market. At the same time, the Internet of things, new forms of mobility concepts or the vision of an intelligent, networked city are opening up a great deal of potential for the creation of new business models both for them and also for us as a traditional energy supplier.

New business models outside of linear developments

In order to successfully position ourselves against the competition in this agile, fast-paced and innovative environment, we have been supporting internal startups within the Group to establish new business models on the market outside of the existing Group structures for the last two and a half years. At our own Innovation Campus founded in Karlsruhe for this purpose, seven teams are now concentrating on the following themes: “Virtual Power Plant”, “Smart City”, “Connected Home” and “Future Mobility”. Baroque façade and media art merge in a fantastic way – Schlosslichtspiele!

Schlossslichtspiele Karlsruhe is a must for every CODE_n festival visitor. Trust us.

Whether it be a Gothic cathedral or an Egyptian temple – the Karlsruhe castle shows many facets at this year’s Schlosslichtspiele. Apparently. Because on the 17-meter-high and 170-meter-wide castle façade projections in enormous compositions are shown. Since the beginning of August, the second edition of the Schlosslichtspiele Karlsruhe has been thrilling its visitors every evening – more than 200,000 people already visited the event during its first half. For the CODE_n new.New Festival the Schlosslichtspiele are now going into extra time to give the guests of the festival the opportunity to experience the impressive interplay between the baroque façade of the Karlsruhe castle and the most up to date IT media art. In addition, the closing event of the CODE_n new.New Festival will also take place at the castle square.

A total of 24 projectors with 20,000 ANSI-lumen each – always three on top of each other – are in use in order to shine the right light on the castle façade. Precisely aligned, so that every edge of the façade is in the exact right place, the projectors are placed in eight cabins that are air-conditioned day and night. That way they ensure the perfect illusion on 10,800 x 1,080 pixels. Besides projections from the past year, five new shows have been created for 2016 that we would like to introduce here quickly.
