The Federal Ministry of Economics Affairs and Energy recently announced the launch of twelve digital hubs in Germany as part of its Digital Hub Initiative. The aim of the program is to foster collaboration between companies and business entrepreneurs, thus allowing them to work side by side in close quarters, similar to Silicon Valley. The program will also help fuel collaboration between the German startup scene and industry hotspots. An alliance of regional players, GFT Technologies SE and CODE_n among them, formed a consortium that nominated and qualified Stuttgart as a leading digital hub in Germany. The focus: the industries of the future! The Initiative is a great opportunity to bundle the strengths of the lively local startup scenes, international world market leaders and the excellent science in Germany!
At the beginning of every new year, the German startup website Für-Gründer.de takes a close look at all of the startup competitions being organized in Germany. When they first embarked on their annual endeavor, there were 124 such contests. Now that number has risen to over 163. A good 20,000 applications came flooding into the competition mailboxes in 2016. Of those, 756 startups received an award from an expert panel of judges. So it looks like startup competitions are groovy-groovy at the moment. Small wonder really: startups are fully aware of the benefits of taking part in a competition – above and beyond the obvious prize money.

At the moment the discussion around electric vehicles is all around the society and has also been picked up by the whole industry.
However, most of the discussion spans around the challenges of charging infrastructure as well as the challenges around battery capacity, charging times for long distance coverage. Therefore I think it is about time to change perspective and think about the customer experience and how EVs will make our life easier.
To start with I believe it is important to agree on what really matters to customers and human beings. As a concept I strongly believe that the single most valuable thing to human beings is time as it is the only thing which is limited and cannot “yet” be extended. Almost all highly successful products launched these days relate to this thesis (think about smartphones, or digital services like Airbnb or Uber).
So let’s look at EVs from that perspective:
The next generation of EVs will come with battery capacities of 150-200 kW/h which is good for more than 500 km.At the same time when we look at statistics we realize that average distance covered per person/day is 46 km and even less so only 12.3 km consecutively per day.
