We continue with an in-depth look at the trend of robotics and AI! Today, let’s turn to another fascinating startup story, this time in a field undergoing sweeping developments – especially when it merges with educational technology (EdTech): our Spanish CODE_n alumnus Aisoy Robotics. Aisoy creates “emotional entertainment robots” that are changing the way people play, learn, discover, and have fun. CODE_n SPACES Residents | Five questions to BABYBE medical, a revolutionary HealthTech startup

Ta-da! Say hello to our new CODE_n SPACES resident BABYBE medical! Every year, 3.3 million babies are born preterm. The big problem is that current incubators do not have the means to foster brain development in premature babies, who need a womb-like environment with something that feels like the heartbeat and voice of the mother. This can now change thanks to “bionic emulation” of the mother’s body, provided by the ingenious technology of BABYBE! We’re delighted to introduce our new CODE_n community member in the HealthTech/IoT sector: BABYBE medical. We asked CTO and founder Raphael Lang 5 questions about the startup, life as an entrepreneur, and the cool stuff they’re doing.

CODE_n SPACES Residents | “We had to learn to let go of our original concept” – The CODE2ORDER startup talks about pivoting

We decided this time to talk to one of the residents of CODE_n SPACES about a topic that many find fascinating, especially in the world of business startups: pivoting! The term “pivoting” originates from the lean startup thinking of Eric Ries. It’s used to describe what happens when a business model has to be completely overhauled and everything goes in a new strategic direction. It’s based on the Build-Measure-Learn method and the idea is that a startup applies lean techniques to radically evolve its business model and address actual market needs and customer requirements. It’s not uncommon for customer feedback, testing, the competitive set, or some overall shift in the market to force business founders to throw out their original idea – just to identify a business model that actually will return a profit. And why not? How often is the first attempt at something right on the mark?

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Valsight from Germany

All good things go by thirteen! Here we are with our last Applied FinTech finalist for the CODE_n CONTEST: Valsight. The Berlin based startup deals with the integration of value driver trees and advanced analytics into the controlling processes of planning, reporting and forecasting. How that works? Managing Director Khai Tran gives the answer!

What is Valsight all about? How did you come up with the idea?

valsight_logoKhai: Valsight is a SaaS solution for enterprise performance management and financial modeling based on value driver trees. The core of our software is a visual modeling editor with a powerful simulation engine that can be used to create financial models, for simulation-based planning and forecasting with predictive analytics. It makes financial controlling more focused and goal-driven by making processes more transparent, flexible and efficient. Our software is especially designed for the needs of management and financial analysts. No programming skills are needed to build financial models or to simulate different scenarios.

Our founding team came up with the idea for Valsight during many years of research with in-memory technology at the Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam. The growing importance of simulation and predictive methods in financial management combined with the maturity of in-memory technology for ultra-fast calculations was the ideal starting point. We have tested our approach early on with a Fortune 500 company, and have since then focused on building state-of-the-art SaaS software to dramatically improve corporate controlling and financial modeling.

“Digital Disruption“ – that’s the motto of this year’s CODE_n CONTEST. What makes your solution innovative, what makes it disruptive?

Khai: The idea of Valsight is to improve traditional controlling and financial modeling processes with methods like simulation and advanced analytics. Our focus is to empower business users to create complex and multidimensional models themselves and to benefit from statistical and predictive features. The core challenge is to keep a strong focus on the needs of the finance community in order to make even complicated functions easy and intuitive to use. More…

Meet our CODE_n CONTEST Finalists 2016: Bit2Me from Spain

You don’t always hear good things about Bitcoins these days; and the one or other negative headline can be read in the media. But there are always two sides of the same coin. Our Applied FinTech finalist Bit2Me says about their business model: “Buying and selling Bitcoins was never that easy.” In our interview, CEO Leif Ferreira tells us how exactly his startup does that and does away with prejudices.

What is Bit2Me all about? How did you come up with the idea?

bit2me_logoLeif: Bit2Me is a company based in Spain. The company was founded in 2015 and is focused on Blockchain technology. We have two of the best Blockchain programmers of Europe, who have won the Visa Fintech Americas world championship in October 2015. Also one of the largest banks in the world, CaixaBank has awarded us as the best 2015 startup in Spain. One year ago, our internal question was, can we do banking with locals, rather than traditional banks? Can a bank be a tool and not a service? There are countries where it’s more expensive to maintain a bank account yearly than a smartphone with internet. So in this line we detected how to do banking without banks, without middlemen companies with the user in the centre. We call this the natural evolution of banking. It’s a different perspective of design.

“Digital Disruption“ – that’s the motto of this year’s CODE_n CONTEST. What makes your solution innovative, what makes it disruptive?

Leif: Hive is a mobile application that provides a disruptive way to decentralize the financial market. It builds a social and open banking ecosystem that never touches people’s money. It allows them to organize themselves in order to create a peer to peer financial human network. More…
