Right now creating software for the Internet of Things is rather costly and time consuming. The Berlin startup M2MGO tackles this problem by offering a platform on which anybody can develop IoT apps fast and cheap. In our interview we asked Jens Uhlig, COO of the CODE_n finalist, among other things how they do this.
Where did your idea for the company come from?
Jens Uhlig: I am connected to the M2M world since the beginning of my professional IT career as working student at Siemens Wireless Modules. After some years and several different engagements I met a fellow student from back then who is still working in this market. He asked me if I knew of an IoT platform he can use to easily create IoT apps to demonstrate the possibilities of M2M modules. After a short market research the idea of M2MGO as an IoT-app-creation-service was born.
For which kind of audience is your product or service intended and what problem is it solving?
M2MGO focusses mainly on hardware and classical product manufacturers who want to open up new business opportunities in the internet of things.
The problem is that IoT solutions are very complex and require a wide range of knowledge in Software Development, System Engineering, cloud computing and online security. Typically classical hardware companies lack of these skills. So in the end the only choice is to set up a conventional project with an external partner with all its disadvantages like high upfront costs, inconvenient flexibility and therefore a high investment risk.
M2MGO tackles exactly this drawback. It has never been easier to create an IoT app for your IoT business case. Furthermore our software as a service approach allows you to quickly react on changing market and customer requirements. This leads to a more agile product development life cycle which fits much better to the high velocity of the IoT market compared to the ancient v- or waterfall project model. Accordingly M2MGO removes the last barrier for entry to the century of the IoT, helping our business customers to save money and time, minimize risk and succeed with their new business models.
Tell us a bit about the company’s founders like professional or industry background and origin of founding-idea.
The team of M2MGO consists of the 4 co-founders. The three males have a strong IT and software engineering background. Each of them has a different core expertise along the technology stack of an IoT solution. As a result we uniquely combine the necessary knowledge to create astonishing solutions for the internet of things.
- Jens is experienced in the different aspects of the M2M market like hardware integration, protocols and interface design. Recently as part of our business development activities he is focusing on Smart Home technology and IoT business cases.
- Benedikt Frings is our CTO and master of our revolutionary content management technology and responsible of the system architecture.
- Oriol Fuertes is our international experienced product manager with strong skills in QA, cloud computing and continuous integration. He is the one who translates business needs into the technical requirements.
- Our female co-founder, Elena Brull, completes the team with her expertise in legal affairs, contract management and business administration. Furthermore she is always a good counterpart to the tech centric perspective of the other members and keeps us focused on the actual business needs.
You claim to offer a place to create Apps for IoT business cases in a never seen speed, almost no upfront costs and without having to write a line of code. These promises make your solution stand out from competing ones. Let’s be upfront: How do you do it?
Our secret ingredient is a cloud-based content management system that has been specially designed for the Internet of Things. As a result M2MGO is the only IoT platform that covers all of the necessary infrastructure and services required by state-of-the-art IoT applications as an out-of-the-box solution. Just like WordPress simplified the way of creating blogs and changed the online content market M2MGO disrupts the way of creating IoT apps.
