Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, discusses whether or not, and at what point, startups should hire a “professional” CEO. Hoffman says that founders need to ask themselves, “What am I really committed to?” since to successfully grow your company, you need to focus on product development and scaling your business.

If you prioritize developing the nuts and bolts of your product over conducting business meetings, then you should look into hiring a “professional” CEO who will handle the day-to-day management responsibilities. However, CEOs should also have insights into product development, as well as years of management experience. He recommends bringing the CEO in as a co-founder of the company and not as an “adult supervisor” so that the outside CEO will have the power to shape the culture and future of the company.
